Have You Made Your Last Will and Testament?

This is not legal advice. If you are planning your estate you need to think about your Inventory of assets and debts. You need to think about the long term effects on children and grandchildren of the decisions you make now.

THIS IS THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT of me, [Enter Your Name Here], presently of the City of Mississauga, in the Province of Ontario.

I. REVOCATION

I HEREBY REVOKE all Wills and testamentary dispositions of every nature or kind whatsoever by me heretofore made.

II. EXECUTOR AND TRUSTEE

I appoint, [Enter a federal or provincial politician’s name here], to be the Executor and Trustee of my Will.

III. RESIDUE

My Estate Trustee shall divide the residue of my carbon estate among my children and grandchildren then living in equal shares per stirpes.

Inventory of my carbon estate that I am leaving to my children and grandchildren:

  1. Carbon generated by my home's natural gas consumption:

2024 to date natural gas: 99 cubic metres of natural gas has already produced 191 kg of CO2e

2023 natural gas: 667 cubic metres of natural gas produced 1,288 kg of CO2e

2022 Add about 3000 kg of CO2e

2021 Add about 5000 kg of CO2e

1979-2020 Add many many tonnes of CO2e

2. Carbon generated by two automobiles:

2 automobiles x Canadian average 4.8 metric tonnes of CO2 per year reduced by using hybrid vehicles

3. Propane barbecue 2 x 20lb cylinders per year

SIGNED, PUBLISHED AND DECLARED by the said Testator, as and for his last Will and Testament in the presence of us, both present at the same time, who at his request, in his presence, and in the presence of each other, have subscribed our names as witnesses.

Signed

Notes to children and grandchildren:

The Enbridge calculator states: "It is also assumed that 1 [cubic metre] of natural gas emits 1.932 kg of CO2e. Environment and Climate Change Canada. National Inventory Report 1990-2020: Greenhouse Gas Sources and Sinks in Canada, 2022, Part 2, page 254-255."

The Enbridge calculator states: "For the purpose of this calculation, it is assumed that the average passenger vehicle emits 4.8 metric tons of CO2 per year."

Grandma and I switched to hybrid automobiles in 2010 and 2014 so we generate less GHG per vehicle than the Canadian average.

Grandma and I did our best to chop our natural gas consumption. Our hot water heating GHG emissions were reduced in 2020 by installing an in-line tankless hot water heater. Home heating GHG emissions were reduced starting in 2022 following an energy audit. If we hadn't switched to a cold climate heat pump in early 2022 our winter monthly natural gas consumption would have frequently looked like these example months:

537 cubic metres of natural gas, in one month alone, produced 1,037 kg of CO2e.

Fortunately we have left some extra cash for you because we actually earned a profit on the federal climate action incentive program. We received more incentive money than we paid out in carbon "tax".

Sorry about the wild fires and floods in Sawmill Creek. We hope you too can make a profit from the federal climate action incentive.
