How to Become an MPP?

Writer's picture: Stephen BissStephen Biss

Have you thought about running for elected office as a Member of the Provincial Parliament for Ontario? Maybe you should think about getting in touch with the political party of your choice and ask them if they have selected their candidate yet. Tell them you are interested.

Maybe you should run as an Independent candidate.

The web site for Elections Ontario says:

"To be eligible to be a candidate you must be:

  • 18 years of age or older on election day;

  • a Canadian citizen;

  • a resident in Ontario for at least six months before election day; and

  • not disqualified by the Legislative Assembly Act or any other legislation."

Elections Ontario has a "Candidates Guide" that you can read.

Why should you run for political office? Because maybe there is no one else who can do a better job. Maybe it is your responsibility to seek political office. Maybe others think that you would do a good job. Maybe other people in your community will support you.
