Should City Councillors in Mississauga propose to the Province of Ontario, suggesting that Cities have the power to designate particular areas of the City as subject to commercial rent control?
What would happen if all of the small businesses in Port Credit or Streetsville were threatened by exorbitant rent increases designed to empty essential shops through business failures, in order to permit condo developments? Should Landlords be able to raise rents exorbitantly or constructively break commercial leases, to turn a thriving essential business improvement area or a community shopping centre into an "underutilized site" so that a Developer can apply to the City and the OLT and argue "The proposal aims to revitalize the subject property and further capitalize on otherwise underutilized lands within this City neighbourhood."
Should the Province of Ontario change the laws of commercial tenancies (a Provincial responsibility) to ensure that residents of a community have access to walkable shops and services? Is such an amendment to the laws of Ontario necessary to protect Mississauga's Official Plan?
